Romanthony, House Producer & ‘One More Time’ Singer, Reported Dead

Romanthony, an influential house producer and singer best known for performing the vocals on Daft Punk’s single “One More Time,” has been reported to have died earlier this month.

The artist, born Anthony Moore, reportedly passed away at his home in Austin, Tex. on May 7. As Chicago’s 5 Magazine points out, Romanthony’s sister Mellony Moore confirmed the passing in a Facebook post on May 9, and friend/collaborators like Boys Noize, MikeQ and Daone Remmidy (better known as Eve Angel) have all taken to social media to confirm the news and express their grief. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

After his production career began in New Jersey, Romanthony’s high-energy “Jersey Garage” style was highlighted on singles like “Make This Love Right” and “Let Me Show You Love,” released on his own Black Male Records label in the early 90s. Later, Azuli Records made him an overseas star with the 1997 release of “Romanworld,” a collection of stellar Black Male productions. Two years later, Glasgow Underground released “Instinctual,” a collaborative full-length with DJ Predator.

Julia Wilson wore pearls and a face of reassurance as she and her husband, Robert, took their seats on an airplane operated by Gold Star Airways half a century ago. Robert Wilson had just been released from a sanitarium. Six months earlier he had suffered a mental breakdown — on an airplane.

“Honey, you are cured,” Mrs. Wilson told her anxious husband as they fastened their seat belts. “That Dr. Martin wouldn’t let you fly if you weren’t — would he?”

The Wilsons believed they were heading home. Viewers that night in 1963 were forewarned of their real destination: “The Twilight Zone.”

New Irish stamp features Irish teen’s short story about Dublin

A new 60c Irish stamp was commissioned to commemorate UNESCO naming Dublin as a permanent city of literature in 2010.

On the stamp is an entire 224 word short story meant to “capture the essence” of Dublin, penned by Irish teenager Eoin Moore, who was 17 at the time he wrote it. Moore’s short story was chosen from a group of applicants through Dublin’s Fighting Words’ creative writing program.

The stamp was designed by the Stone Twins, Amsterdam-based Irish designers.

The official stamp was unveiled on Thursday May 16 at Roddy Doyle’s Fighting Words Centre, with Irish president Michael D. Higgins on hand at the unveiling. It is available for purchase at Irish main post offices, Dublin’s GPO and online.

Can art change the world?

“If you give me Times Square, I want to give it back to the people.”

JR, the 30-year-old globetrotting French street artist, could well say the same about the slums of Kenya or the favelas of Brazil, where he has created large-scale projects.

Known for his black-and-white portraits, poster-sized or much larger and pasted on public walls, streets, grounds, rooftops and even trucks, JR considers himself an “urban artivist” — i.e., an artist who is an activist.

In New York earlier this month, he invited passersby to get their portraits taken and pasted on the ground at Times Square. Equipped with a photo booth truck that instantaneously printed 36”x53” posters, his crew recruited volunteers — some of whom held a large broom/brush and very sticky glue — to help add the next portrait to the mosaic of faces.

Giant Renaissance Food People Descend Upon New York

It takes a lot of chutzpah to reduce one of the most powerful men on Earth to a pile of fruits and vegetables.

Luckily for art lovers, Giuseppe Arcimboldo had nerve to spare.

Arcimboldo created this unorthodox produce portrait of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II back in 1590. By that time, the Italian artist had been painting for the emperor and his powerful Habsburg family for more than 25 years, so presumably, they’d grown used to his visual jokes. (The emperor has “peachy” cheeks and “ears” of corn, get it?)

Though he also dabbled in the angels and saints that were the standard stuff of art in his day, Arcimboldo is best known for his “scherzi” or “capricci” — “meaning jokes or games,” as David Brown, a curator at the National Gallery of Art, explains in this video.

“It’s very clear that’s how they were meant to be seen,” Brown says. “They were a source of amusement or entertainment, because there was this element of surprise.”

That they also often feature an element of fruits, berries or other foods is partly a reflection of the Renaissance blossoming of natural sciences, like botany.
